Hydrogen Boosted Gasoline Engines – Running The Cars Of The Future

Thursday, February 16th, 2012 by

Gas rates keep going up, and that means VW Beetle automakers are having to work extremely hard to find ways to make their cars more fuel-efficient. Even as they go about this process, they are still required to meet latest emissions standards for gasoline engines. The addition of hydrogen in the fuel/air mixture is just one hopeful possibility of improving gas engine mileage.

Before now, no hydrogen boosted engine has existed because hydrogen is not now available at fueling stations. Since the inclusion of hydrogen may be an effective way to increase fuel efficiency, this may not be true for much longer. Hydrogen boosted fuel engines are beneficial because of the low amounts of NOX emission gas. Therefore, the necessity of curbing external NOX emissions may be totally phased out. NOX emissions management makes a huge money issue for diesel engines as they require costly traps to help them comply with current emissions standards. Diesel engines release particulate by-products which are gathered with a filter that requires frequent replacement.

The benefit of the hydrogen boosted engines is that they have no need for either particulate or NOX control. Having just an economical oxidation catalyst, the engine can control the level of exhaust that is released while the car is starting and warming up. When the engine gets going cold, it has the possibility of only using a clean hydrogen rich charge; therefore, even more cuts can be made in wastes control requirements as emissions tests are typically done during this warm up period.

The most up-to-date technology enables a functioning engine compartment to have a reformer put in, and this basically gives the car a hydrogen boost system. Based on system designers, this is even less expensive than adding diesel. Sport utility vehicles are currently being used to evaluate prototype hydrogen boosted engines as they are large enough to accommodate the reformer system. Before the system goes into further development, there is yet a long process of testing for performance, durability, and reliability. This technology will probably be targeted toward four-cylinder gasoline engines. Economy auto producers who aspire to be at the forefront with the best fuel efficiency will have to compete hard in order to succeed.

Using hydrogen boosted gas engines, drivers have no need to worry so much about increasing gas prices because these engines will enable them to drive further on each gallon of gas. Using a hydrogen boosted system will allow you to save on gas without having to invest in a diesel car or truck. When considering long term solutions, the hydrogen boost system may provide one of the better answers to the world’s energy problems.
